Missionary risks are rising, says security expert

| February 23, 2011

With eyes wide open. That's how missionaries face lives where uncertainty and some risk may be unavoidable, said Ventura County mission leaders reacting to the four people killed Tuesday by Somali pirates off East Africa.

Scott and Jean Adam of Marina del Rey, who used their yacht to distribute Bibles to remote places across the world, were taken hostage and fatally wounded before U.S. naval forces boarded the hijacked vessel and unsuccessfully tried lifesaving techniques. Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle of Seattle, who were traveling with the Adams, were also killed by the pirates.

At Ventura County churches involved in mission work in places ranging from the Middle East to Haiti, people emphasized the ways in which the tragedy was different from what they do. Once part of a larger group, the four victims were sailing by themselves in an area known for pirate attacks. There's been no reports religion played a role in the attack.
