No charges to be filed in church embezzlement

| May 2, 2011

A case involving money being embezzled from Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy is closed, a city detective said Friday.

“There’s not going to be criminal charges,” Detective R.B. Davis of the Mount Airy Police Department said.

This is resulting from an agreement being worked out between the church and a woman who has been listed as an employee of the North Main Street landmark that boasts one of the largest congregations in this area.

A church official had told police earlier this spring that the employee allegedly embezzled $13,473 from Central Methodist. That person had fiduciary responsibilities that allowed her access to church finances, with the missing proceeds said to involve both cash and credit card funds.
