Nun suspects theft by man she was trying to help

| September 22, 2010

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A Catholic nun told Evansville police she believes a young man who said he was a college student needing help stole a credit card and money from her.

Sister Jane Nesmith said she first met the man on Sept. 8 when he stopped at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, where she is the pastoral coordinator. She gave him $20 toward a bus ticket to Alabama for a funeral.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports that Nesmith asked him to return for volunteer work, which he did Sept. 13. She told police that her credit card was missing the next day and was used at a grocery store. The card was back in her purse after another visit by the man, but cash was missing.

No arrests were immediately made.
