CORPUS CHRISTI — A 47-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of attempting to steal copper wire after witnesses spotted him lying in tall grass next to an air conditioner unit.

An off-duty officer was assisting a pastor close gates at a church about 2 a.m. in the 3000 block of Ayers Street when they spotted someone hiding in the tall grass nearby, police said.

The off-duty officer found the man by the church’s air conditioners with an 8 mm socket and ratchet set, police said.

The officer told police the man had used the tools to pry open the AC unit’s cover and had attempted to take copper wire inside.

The pastor said he had seen the man earlier by the air conditioners pretending to be asleep in the tall grass.

Police arrested Herman Deleon, 47, on suspicion of theft of wire or cable, a state jail felony. He was being held Wednesday at the Nueces County Jail on $2,000 bail.
