Officials name suspect in Houston-area church thefts

| June 15, 2011

A woman who investigators believe was seen on a church's security video rummaging through another woman's belongings may be linked to several thefts at Houston area houses of worship, authorities said Monday.

The video shows a woman identified by Harris County sheriff's deputies as Cynthia Gonzalez, 43, as she is rifling through someone else's purse while the woman was taking communion.

"The last place you think of becoming victimized is during a church service," said Christina Garza, a Harris County sheriff's spokeswoman.

The theft on the surveillance video happened March 15. Sheriff's officials did not identify the church.

A woman can be seen on the video slipping into one of the pews at the church, directly behind a church member, and appears to check her immediate surroundings. The church member slips her purse under the pew when she moves forward to take communion, officials said.
