LOUSIVILLE — One person was killed and another critically injured when a gunman opened fire during a homeowners association meeting at Springdale Community Church in eastern Jefferson County Thursday evening, Louisville Metro Police said.
The suspected gunman, whose name has not been released, was subdued by a retired Louisville police officer who was at the church, said Alicia Smiley, a police spokeswoman. She said the suspect was taken into custody and was being questioned.
Police said fewer than 20 people were in the church at the time of the shooting. Police did not know anything about the shooter’s motive or whether specific people were targeted, Smiley said.
The church is at 4601 Springdale Road, near the junction of Interstate 71 and the Gene Snyder Freeway.
A meeting of the Spring Creek Homeowners Association was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The Spring Creek subdivision is across from the church.
Neighbors said they believe the suspect had long-running disputes over deed restrictions, but that has not been confirmed by police.
