Pastor admits stealing cash donated to Waterloo church

| May 12, 2011

KITCHENER — The senior pastor at a Waterloo church admitted Wednesday that he helped himself to almost $12,000 in donations.

Paul Hartig, 46, was sentenced to nine months of house arrest for theft over $5,000 during a 16-month period in 2009 and 2010.

Justice Michael Epstein also placed him on probation for three years and ordered him to do 200 hours of community service work.

“It’s aggravated by the fact that you took money donated by church members in good faith for good works,” Epstein said.

Hartig took the money from a vault in small amounts while working at St. John’s Lutheran Church.–pastor-admits-stealing-cash-donated-to-waterloo-church
