Pastor of burned Baytown church: ‘God is in control’

| July 19, 2011

BAYTOWN, Texas— The pastor and parishioners of a Baytown church are keeping a positive outlook after a fire, which investigators say may have been intentionally set, broke out at their church early Monday.

"It really is painful, it hurts, but God saw us through before and he can see us through again," said Pastor Kevin Kleinhez.

The fire erupted at the Living Hope Church, located in the 7600 block of Highway 146, just before 4 a.m.

It took more than 40 Baytown and Belvieu firefighters two hours to extinguish the blaze, which caused traffic along Highway 146 to temporarily shut down until crews cleared the scene.

Pastor Kleinhez believes the fire was not an accident and investigators said the cause is suspicious.

The pastor said someone broke into the church Friday, stole a guitar and vandalized the inside of the church and a bus. Surveillance video showed a teen fleeing the scene on a bicycle following the offense.
