Petach Tikvah Synagogue Desecrated

| October 17, 2009

Worshippers at the Heichal Meir synagogue in Petach Tikvah were shocked to find the synagogue vandalized and desecrated when they arrived for services on Shabbat morning. Overnight Friday, windows were broken, anti-Semitic graffiti was sprayed on walls, the central prayer bima platform was hacked to pieces, prayer books were ripped apart, and several bottles of wine, used for kiddush in the synagogue, were lying about, apparently drunk by the vandals.

Police are investigating, but no arrests have been made so far. There have been several similar incidents at Petach Tikvah synagogues in recent months. The Heichal Meir synagogue is sponsored by Israeli businessman Meir Shamir, who is said to have invested over a million shekels in the building, dedicated in honor of his late mother. Shamir said he was "terribly shocked" at the damage.
