Plea deal pending in St. Mary School embezzlement case
CHARLEVOIX — The end of a long and difficult legal battle involving a Charlevoix church and its school’s former principal may be in sight.
On Friday, March 9, former St. Mary School principal Keisha Veryser of Hayes Township, is scheduled to take advantage of a plea agreement with the Charlevoix County Prosecutor’s office in which she will plead guilty to two counts of embezzlement from a nonprofit organization, $1,000-$20,000. The charges are felonies that carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison. In exchange for her pleas, three more identical charges and two counts of perjury in a non-court proceeding will be dismissed.
Charlevoix County Prosecuting Attorney John Jarema said another condition of the plea agreement is that Veryser agrees to pay $75,000 in restitution, with half of that amount to be paid up front and the rest to be paid over the course of her upcoming probation.
