Police: Man who stabbed priest was high on bath salts

High on bath salts and acting under an increasing sense of paranoia, a 25-year-old West Scranton man broke into a church monastery early Wednesday morning and stabbed a priest in the face and hand, according to a criminal complaint.

Police said Ryan Foley, 1316 Cornell St., broke into the monastery at St. Ann's Basilica at about 2:40 a.m., entered the bedroom of the Rev. Francis Landry and stabbed and possibly bludgeoned the cleric.

According to police:

When the Rev. Landry screamed, Mr. Foley left the room, closed the door behind him and left the monastery.As he exited the building, he saw Scranton Police Sgt. Thomas Carroll approaching and turned back inside.
