Police: Teen Molested Boy At Charlotte Church

| July 20, 2010

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged a 16-year-old boy with molesting a 12-year-old boy at a church in uptown Charlotte on Sunday afternoon.

Both boys were attending a program at Nexus Church, located on North College Street, when police said 16-year-old Javon Patterson asked the 12-year-old to expose himself. When the boy refused, police said Patterson fondled the boy then rubbed against him in a sexually suggestive way.

The senior pastor at the church told Eyewitness News that Patterson has been attending the church for almost two years, but is not on the staff there or a volunteer.

“This is a 16-year-old who attends our services as one of our youth," Dr. Noah Manyika said.

Yet, the father of the 12-year-old questioned why his son was left alone with an older boy.

"I don't doubt that they're good people," the boy's father said. “But for this to have happened to my child — or any child — is just unacceptable.”
