Potsdam synagogue vandalized 2nd time

| July 10, 2011

POTSDAM — A religious sign in front of Congregation Beth El Synagogue in Potsdam is under siege. It has been vandalized twice in the past nine months, and temple elders say it is a hate crime.

"The temple has enemies," said Adam D. Jaffee, a temple trustee and member of the congregation for nearly 25 years.

The sign, in front of the temple on 81 Market St., is made up of three tiers and has a sandstone base. It was broken Oct. 22 and again the night of June 5, Mr. Jaffee said.

The sign was built in 2005 for $1,200 by Witherbee and Whalen Inc., Canton. The company is back for another round of repairs — this time at a cost of $320.
