LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) — A woman who works for the Presbyterian Church in Louisville has been charged with making misleading statements to BB&T bank in order to secure a loan.

According to a police report obtained by Fox 41 News, Brenda Michelle Smithers, a resident of Jeffersonville, Ind., got a loan for $332,964 by lying about her finances and her position at J & M Express Inc. As a result of her misrepresentations, the report states, BB&T sustained a financial loss of roughly $311,255.

A spokesperson for the Presbyterian Church (USA) said Smithers served as a senior legal assistant in the church's legal and risk management services department. She has been suspended from her job, pending further information, according to that spokesperson.

Fox 41 News attempted to contact Smithers, but she could not be reached for comment.

She has been charged with one count of theft by deception.
