Priest attacked in attempted armed robbery at Metairie church

| March 29, 2013

Authorities say two men who tried to rob a Metairie church hit a priest with a crowbar when he couldn't open up a safe on Sunday night. The unidentified priest had minor injuries and was treated at the scene, according to Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The robbery attempt occurred just before 11 p.m. at St. Clement of Rome Church, 4317 Richland Ave., Metairie, Fortunato said. The priest was in his office when two men entered. One was armed with pistol, and the other had the crowbar.

The men demanded the priest open a church safe. But when the priest couldn't get the safe open, one of the robbers hit him with the crowbar, Fortunato said. The suspects then ran off, without taking any property, in an unknown direction.
