Priest Who Fleeced Flock Released From Prison

| April 26, 2010

After serving only about a year of fourteen month prison sentence for theft, a Delray Beach priest convicted of stealing from his church is a free man.

Sunday morning, the Reverand John Skehan, 82, was released from the Martin Correctional Institution. He will now serve seven years probation and pay more than $700,000 in restitution.

Skehan was sentenced last year for stealing more than $370,000 from St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church where he served for 40 years.

Skehan and another priest took the money to fund lavish lifestyles, including upscale homes, gambling trips and rare coin collections.

The Rev. Francis Guinan, 66, was sentenced last year to four years in prison after being found guilty of second-degree grand theft. Guinan was accused of stealing $488,000 from the same church but jurors found him guilty on the lesser charge of stealing less than $100,000. He remains behind bars.
