Prosecutor: Rutherford synagogue was firebombed in attempted murder

| January 11, 2012

RUTHERFORD — Arsonists threw Molotov cocktails into the windows of an Orthodox synagogue while the rabbi and his family slept inside early this morning, authorities said.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli today told reporters Congregation Beth El on Montross Avenue was firebombed by one or more arsonists who threw multiple explosive devices into the temple and residential home with the intent to kill.

"This is certainly a hate crime, this is certainly a bias crime, this is aggravated arson, but most importantly, we're now looking at this as an attempted homicide," Molinelli said.
