Prosecutors may use slain Chatham priest’s cell phone as evidence in case

| February 7, 2011

CHATHAM BOROUGH — The prosecution may introduce evidence linking the use of a slain Chatham priest’s cell phone to his alleged assailant, a Superior Court judge ruled today.

Judge Thomas Manahan, sitting in Morristown, also ruled that the prosecution may use evidence about accused murderer Jose Feliciano’s prior criminal record, on the condition that the prosecution first establishes a basis for that evidence.

Feliciano, 65, of Easton, Pa., the former custodian of St. Patrick Church, is accused of murder and robbery in the Oct. 22, 2009 stabbing death of the Rev. Edward Hinds, the church pastor.
