Queens man charged with spray-painting swastikas on synagogue and church

| November 15, 2011

Cops charged a 40-year-old Jackson Heights man Tuesday with defacing a Queens synagogue, library and church with swastikas, but are still hunting for the anti-semites wanted for torching three cars in Brooklyn.

Franco Rodriguez admitted etching his hateful handiwork earlier this month because, he claimed, "Jewish people were harassing him." He faces up to five years in prison for committing a hate crime with graffiti.

"As a civilized society, we will not stand idly by and allow individuals to mar our neighborhoods with such hate graffiti," said Queens D.A. Richard Brown.

The Queens incidents, the fire set Friday to three cars in Midwood, and other incidents in the city’s Jewish enclaves have restdients there fearing a surge in anti-Semitic attacks.

Mayor Bloomberg said there's no evidence to suggest that.

“There's a couple of incidents," he said Monday. "There are always a couple of incidents. We have 8.4 million people."

He promised an arrest soon. "Invariably, it will come out and we will catch them," Bloomberg said.
