Rabbi attacked, robbed in Moldova

| July 3, 2009

Rabbi Israel Livshits, leader of the Jewish community at the cultural and religious centre in Chisinau, has been attacked and robbed.

"I have no doubts that the attack had anti-Semitic character," the rabbi told local television.

The incident took place in the village of Panasesti, where Livshits was fishing with his students.

"A group of about 6 to 9 local young people aged between 16 and 20 lay in wait and attacked perfidiously those asleep in the morning, beat them up and took the rabbi’s food and trip money (about 300 euros), " the Federation of the CIS Jewish Communities told www.interfax-religion.ru today.

A representative of the federation said that the elderly man "was shaken and had his beard pulled, and anti-Semitic insults were shouted at him in the presence of his students".

A criminal case has been launched and some of the attackers already detained, the federation said.
