Reverend arrested on embezzlement charges

A local reverend was arrested Friday on nine charges of embezzlement.

The Rev. Johnnie Lee Jones, of 3330 Rockhill Church Road in Concord, turned himself in at the Salisbury Police Department. He is accused of embezzling $20,000 over two years from the Western North Carolina Association (WNCA) of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ.

For four years, Jones served as treasurer for the WNCA office at 204 Lantz Avenue in Salisbury. Police say that starting in 2008, he wrote nine checks from the organization to his own business, Jones Accounting & Tax Services in Concord.

When his second term as treasurer ended this year, he had to turn over the association's financial records. At that time, he also handed in a letter explaining what he had done and that he wanted to repay the stolen money. Police say he already has paid back about $5,000.

Jones was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,000 bond, and his first court appearance was scheduled for Monday.
