Roanoke police investigate racial slurs on Shul

| July 27, 2009

Roanoke City Police are investigating four cases of property damage that involve three businesses and a synagogue. All of them do appear related.

On the front doors of Beth Israel Synagogue on Franklin Road, dark green paint stood out on the snow white doors. Words targeted the Jewish religion that had congregation members scrubbing them away.

“Maybe they found the places and wanted to express their self in every place, but we’re still concerned, and I think it’s a shame that it happened,” said Rabbi Fabian Werbin.

At Horizon Home Care on Jefferson Street, racial slurs were painted on the side of the building. Workers there believe it was the blank wall the vandals found appealing. Now, everything there has been painted over. One of the workers said the lid on the spray paint can was left outside. She said police took that in hopes they could get some fingerprints.
