Russian priest stabbed to death in home

MOSCOW, May 5 (UPI) — A priest was fatally stabbed in the central Russian republic of Chuvashia, the second clergyman killed there in two weeks, officials said.

A monk of St. Michael the Archangel church in the city of Cheboksary was found in his home with multiple knife wounds, RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.

Police are investigating.

On April 24, Father Anatoly, 46, was shot to death in his church in the village of Yantikovo, RIA Novosti said.

Police say they have taken a 47-year-old man with a history of mental problems into custody in connection with that shooting.

In 2009 two priests were shot to death in Moscow within weeks of each other.

One of the Moscow victims was known for his efforts to convert Muslims and people attempting to quit religious sects to Christianity.

His murder drew outrage from religious groups in Russia and demands for better security for the clergy, RIA Novosti said.
