S.A. man and woman die at church altar in Helotes

| January 12, 2012

HELOTES — A San Antonio man and woman were found dead near the altar of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church here in what police said appeared to be a murder-suicide.

Security cameras inside the Helotes church recorded the pair walking toward the main altar, police Lt. Elliott Rodriguez said.

They did not appear agitated, Rodriguez said. When the two stood still, the motion-sensitive cameras shut off, he said.

About 3 p.m., shots were heard from the main sanctuary.

Through windows, an arriving officer saw two people lying on the floor, but the main doors were locked, so the officer went through a side chapel and found the pair close to each other with a pistol on the floor between them, Rodriguez said.

They were found between a baptismal font and two steps that lead up to the altar, he said. No one else was in the sanctuary or chapel at the time of the shooting, Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said police have identified the couple but would not release their names pending notification of family members.

He said they were from San Antonio but wouldn't confirm they were married or release other details of their relationship.
