Santa Rosa Standoff Ends; Man Tasered After Attempting To Torch Church

| July 5, 2010

SANTA ROSA — A 22-year-old man who allegedly attempted to set fire to a church was subdued by police with a Taser stun gun and arrested on charges of arson after several hours of negotiations, according to Santa Rosa police.

Police responded to reports of a burglary alarm at the Resurrection Parish at 303 Stony Point Road at about 7:50 p.m. Officers located a broken window and found Antonio Luevano, of Santa Rosa, inside the church.

Armed with a knife, Luevano allegedly refused to cooperate with officers and barricaded himself inside the church.

A hostage negotiations team attempted to coax Luevano to drop his weapon and exit the church, but Luevano instead began destroying property inside the church and attempted to ignite a fire.

Several hours later, officers used a Taser stun gun on Luevano and were able to take him into custody, according to police.

Luevano was booked into the Sonoma County jail on charges of felony vandalism, felony vandalism of a religious property and arson.

Neither Luevano nor any officers sustained injuries during the incident, police said.
