Seguin seeks end to string of church burglaries

| October 27, 2010

SEGUIN — A thief has targeted three churches in Seguin, and now the congregation leaders are stepping up security.

The suspect seems to seek cameras, laptop computers and cash.

Pastors said most churches do not keep cash on hand, even from Sunday to Monday.

In some cases, the burglar apparently gets away with nothing, but causes significant damage.

"We've seen some vandalism outside on the wall, but it's the first time the church has ever been broken into," said Jim Price of Cross Church.

Another pastor expressed his frustration.

"It's sad that folks are unable to come out and seek help directly rather than having to break into churches and businesses to make ends meet," said Steve Purdy, senior pastor with United Methodist Church.

During the first break-in, the robber cut himself.

Seguin police hope that someone will provide tips to help them with a lead.
