Senate backs bill to allow guns in church

| June 16, 2010

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) – The Louisiana Senate has revived and passed a bill that would allow concealed weapons to be carried inside churches.

The House-passed proposal had been rejected by a Senate committee, but Woodworth Sen. Joe McPherson proposed tacking the measure into another bill Tuesday. The Senate agreed in a 22-10 vote, then sent the bill back to the House for approval of the change.

The move puts the proposal by Haughton Rep. Henry Burns one step from final passage.

Supporters of the bill say it would give an option to ministers and pastors to incorporate concealed handguns into their security plans. Opponents argue it's inappropriate to have concealed handguns in church.

Churches choosing to allow concealed carry would have to inform their congregations of the decision.
