Shooting Breaks Out At North Miami Church

| July 3, 2010

A young man was shot and killed outside a North Miami church Friday night and police continue to search for the shooter.

North Miami Police were dispatched to the Fraternity Baptist Church, located at 13300 NE 7th Avenue, upon hearing of the shooting at the end of a wake that took place inside.

Officials say everyone was gathered outside the church after the service when the shooting broke out. A 19-year-old man died outside the doorsteps to the church. He was identified as Robert Sam. A young woman was grazed in the left arm by a bullet. She was treated and released at the scene, said North Miami Police spokesman Lt. Neal Cuevas.

Detectives are on scene investigating. They are trying to find out if the shooting was gang retaliation, as gang members might be involved.

Family members took the woman who survived to the hospital for treatment.

Police have not said who the shooter is or if there's more than one; they are looking for a gold colored Dodge Intrepid that fled the scene.

When Montfort Labranche heard about the shooting, he rushed over to the church to check on his son who had been attending the viewing.

"Yes, he's okay," Labranche said followed by a smile.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Guadarrama of the North Miami Police Department at 305-891-8111.
