Stolen checks recovered, but money in lockdown

| October 16, 2011

KEARNEY — Police investigators have recovered “many, many” checks that were stolen one week ago from Prince of Peace Catholic Church, but recovering the checks doesn’t mean money will be going into the church’s coffers, as parishioners had intended.

Church staff Monday discovered the theft of an undisclosed sum of collection money from last weekend’s services at the new Catholic church in north Kearney.

According to Prince of Peace Pastor Mike McDonald, the checks were discovered this week in a Dumpster and now are being held as evidence in the investigation. Law enforcement officials could hold the checks indefinitely, so the money won’t be heading to the church.
