Surveillance Camera Captures Suspected Arsonist at Detroit Church

| September 27, 2011

DETROIT (WJBK) – No one seems to know why a man would want to set a historic church on fire. Arson investigators have been searching for him all summer. They are now asking the public to join the hunt.

It happened June 17 around 9:30 p.m. A surveillance camera inside the People's Community Church captured a man at one of the entrances. He sat on the steps for more than 20 minutes. He looked around and stuffed paper under the door, then lit it.

The video shows the fire spreading quickly. Luckily, the church is well protected, so the fire caused smoke damage, but the flames did not make it inside.

The alarm sounded and Detroit firefighters responded within minutes.

You can barely tell that an arson ever happened, but it is a crime church members will never forget.
