Suspect sought in Dale County church shooting

| March 16, 2010

Sheriff’s officials say the incident took place late Thursday night or Friday morning. The suspect or suspects remain on the loose.

Members of the Mount Hebron United Methodist Church are devastated by the damage. The church is home to only thirty-five members, but those members are committed to finding those who are responsible.

Church Member Lowell Williams said, "It's quite a shock to come see the front door of the church you go to has been blasted by a shot of buckshot."

Williams is just one of the members of Mount Hebron Church who are outraged by an early morning shooting into this place of worship.

As Williams commented, "We've got quite a bit of damage here on the front door and they may have to be totally replaced, and we've got buckshot behind the pulpit and damage on the wooden door behind you."

Sheriff’s officials have yet to learn of a motive.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson added, "At this point in time, we haven't established if it's a problem with the church itself, or a member, or maybe just an act of criminal mischief."

The search is on for the person responsible for this act of violence.

According to Sheriff Olson, "Right now we've got two individuals we are going to interview and we have people who are going to saturate the area to see if anyone's seen anything."

Officials are hoping that the public will come forward to help them make an arrest in this case. If a suspect is caught in this case, he or she will be charged with criminal mischief.

Officials estimate that there is more than $2,500 worth of damage to the church. That money will have to be paid back in full by the person or persons convicted of these charges.
