Suspect to be evaluated in Coudersport church shooting

| January 18, 2013

COUDERSPORT — A Coudersport man will undergo a mental health evaluation before his preliminary hearing on charges he murdered his ex-wife during a church service.

Potter County District Attorney Andy Watson said the preliminary hearing for 52-year-old Gregory Eldred, of Dutch Hill Road, will be postponed indefinitely until the evaluation is finished.

Eldred is jailed on charges that he fatally shot 53-year-old Darlene Sitler while she was playing the organ during a service at the First United Presbyterian Church of Coudersport on Dec. 2.

Eldred’s hearing was to have been Tuesday.

Watson said he agreed with Eldred’s attorney to delay the hearing until after the mental health evaluation.

Eldred’s attorney didn’t return a call for comment, but Watson said the evaluation serves the public interest by making an eventual appeal less likely.
