‘Suspicious substance’ found at Redding church

REDDING — Federal investigators and firefighters from the area responded to reports of a "suspicious substance" that was received in the mail Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church in the Georgetown section of Redding.

Danbury Fire Chief Geoff Herald said Danbury fire officials received a call for mutual aid for the department's decontamination truck. It was sent to the scene early Tuesday afternoon.

He added that at least one person was decontaminated with the equipment and was not showing any symptoms from the exposure late Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency officials were not able to elaborate late Tuesday on what type of substance had been found at the church.

A statement released by Police Chief Douglas Fuchs, however, said "at this time, there is no danger to the surrounding community." He added that local, state and federal agencies are investigating the incident.

Herald said investigators with the local FBI office also responded.

Officials with the FBI and the church were not immediately available for comment Tuesday night.
