Teen surrenders after SWAT standoff at east side church

| April 5, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A 19-year-old has surrendered to police hours after barricading himself inside a church on the city's east side, police said Thursday evening.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said at about 3 p.m., Calvin Griffin, Indianapolis, barricaded himself in the First Christian Missionary Baptist Church, in the 6000 block of East 38th Street. The teen is the pastor's grandson, IMPD said, and he shot at the pastor inside the church but did not hit him.

Traffic was restricted in the area during the standoff, which lasted about four hours. Because of the large size of the building, Indiana State Police SWAT officers were called to assist in securing the scene. IMPD said traffic restrictions would be lifted after emergency crews cleared the scene of equipment.
