Teen waives right in Greene church arson

| October 7, 2010

STANARDSVILLE — A Greene County teen will stand trial on charges he broke into and started the Aug. 22 fire at Ruckersville Baptist Church.

Sean Douglas Heiderscheidt, 18, waived his right Wednesday to a preliminary hearing on charges of arson of an occupied church, breaking and entering of a church with the intent to commit, felony vandalism of a church and felony vandalism of a cemetery, Commonwealth’s Attorney Ronald L. Morris said.

Heiderscheidt is scheduled to appear in Greene County General District Court again Tuesday.

Heiderscheidt is one of two teens charged in the case, and he remains in custody at the Central Regional Jail in Orange. A 17-year-old boy faces the same charges and is being held at Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Center in Albemarle County.

Last month, Heiderscheidt testified that he and the boy went to the church Aug. 22 after drinking liquor in the cemetery.

Heiderscheidt denied he went into the church. He claimed to have seen the boy go inside and then flames through the stained-glass windows of the church.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the church early Aug. 22 after a neighbor saw flames coming from the front of the church. The fire destroyed the front of the church and caused heavy smoke and water damage throughout the building.
