Teenager fined for smashing windows at synagogue

| October 1, 2009

A TEENAGER who smashed windows at an Edinburgh synagogue has been ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation.
Junaid Javed, 17, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court where he admitted maliciously breaking eight panes of glass in the front windows at Salisbury Hebrew Congregation Synagogue at the city’s Salisbury Place.

The offence happened on 12 March this year.

Defence agent Peter O’Neill told the court Javed had visited the Rabbi at the Synagogue to apologise.

Sheriff Derrick McIntyre told Javed: "This is disgraceful behaviour."

He ordered the teenager, of Minto Street, Edinburgh, to pay the compensation at £10 a week until he gets a job.
