A Texas man was arrested Sunday after causing a disturbance during morning worship services at First Baptist Church in West Monroe.

John Thornton, age unavailable, of Wimberley, Texas, was arrested by West Monroe police for disturbing the peace after flicking a cigarette at the church's Global Ministries Pastor Mark Fenn during church services.

According to West Monroe Officer Chris Place, Thornton was attending the church service when he walked to the front of the church near the pulpit. Thornton was drinking a cup of coffee and smoking a cigarette.

When Fenn asked Thornton to put out the cigarette, Thornton flicked the cigarette toward Fenn, hitting him in the chest. Security personnel removed Thornton from the service.

Place said Fenn declined to press charges against Thornton. However, Place said West Monroe police arrested him for disturbing the peace.

Thornton was being held Sunday at the West Monroe jail. His bond was set at $2,000.
