The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives takes over investigation of bombing near Oklahoma City church

| October 2, 2011

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has taken over an investigation into a bomb that went off in northwest Oklahoma City, officials said Thursday.

The bomb went off about 7:10 a.m. Wednesday inside a metal trash bin behind the Penn Avenue Church of the Nazarene, 1121 N Pennsylvania Ave. No one was hurt, and nothing was damaged other than the trash bin.

A woman who picks up trash in the church parking lot said she saw a white box next to the trash bin just after 7 a.m. that had not been there 10 minutes earlier. She put the box in the trash bin and walked across the street when she heard the explosion.

The Oklahoma City police bomb squad responded, and the ATF was called in to help.
