Thief: Church didn’t watch finances

| February 12, 2012

A Huron woman who stole $140,000 from two local churches could end up paying more than twice that amount in restitution and penalties when all is said and done.

Deborah Collinsworth, 48, was recently sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to theft, grand theft, misuse of a credit card and attempted tampering with evidence.

During a five-year period she stole tens of thousands of dollars while working as a part-time bookkeeper at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 344 Columbus Ave., and First Faith Community Church, 225 Jefferson St.

Church leaders discovered the thefts about a year ago while reviewing financial accounts. Collinsworth would write herself checks from church bank accounts and also steal money from tithes, police said.

While she'll be eligible for release from prison after six months, her criminal case is not the least of her worries.
