Thief rips $8,000 from North Van church’s collection plate

| April 16, 2010

An alleged thief stole thousands of dollars from a North Van church earlier this month.

On Wednesday (April 14), the pastor of St Pius Church contacted RCMP after noticing $8,000 in collection money – $2,790 in cash and $5,300 in cheques – had vanished.

Police say the money was stolen from the Mt. Seymour Parkway church's rectory some time during the past two weeks.

“We really hope the person or persons responsible for this crime have a change of heart and contacts us or Crimestoppers," said Cpl. Marlene Morton. "The stolen funds were to be used for both anti-hunger programs in developing nations and to help run the church.”

Police are asking those with any information to contact Const. Saville at 604-985-1311 (file number 2010-8496). Those with information but wish to remain anonymous are asked to contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-22-TIPS.
