Thieves steal 10 commandments from church

| November 6, 2011

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) – After their church burned in 2007, members of First United Methodist in Denham Springs were worshipping inside a new building nine months later. But mischief has once again tiptoed onto the religious ground.

There are certain religious symbols one would expect to see around a church. Glance high or low and you're guaranteed to see the cross outside the First United Methodist Church. Just like inside, you'd expect to see someone with the bible.

The chapter with the ten commandments has become especially important in the last few days.

"You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery," reads Rev. Ginny Allen.

But it's the next one that someone ignored.

"It's obvious they weren't familiar with what they said, or they would have known the eighth commandment says thou shalt not steal," she said.

The ten commandments were posted outside the sanctuary, but last Thursday, the 100-pound concrete tablets went missing.

Reverend Allen says they believe someone took them as a Halloween prank, thinking they looked like tombstones.
