Trial delayed for man charged in church burglary

CHIPPEWA FALLS – A trial for an Eau Claire man charged with stealing several thousand dollars from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Chippewa Falls has been delayed until January.

Kurt W. Meyer, 39, 2003 Manor Court, was charged in Chippewa County Court in April with breaking into the church Dec. 26 or Dec. 27. Money collected from several Masses over Christmas weekend was missing when parishioners showed up Dec. 27 to count it.

A trial was slated to begin Oct. 5, but it was pushed back to Jan. 10 at a hearing Wednesday.

Chippewa County assistant district attorney Wade Newell said the case was delayed because his office just received DNA results related to the case and is waiting for other reports.

Chippewa Falls attorney Tom Lange, who is defending Meyer, said his client is upset about the delay.

"We wanted to go forward Oct. 5th," Lange said. "I understand (Meyer) wants this done as quickly as possible. He doesn't like being in jail on something he feels he is being set up for."
