Two charges dropped against alleged church attacker

JONESBORO – Two of the attempted murder charges against Willis E. Bates in the Sept. 28 attack of two elderly women inside an Anna church have been dropped.

Bates, 45, who appeared again in the Union County courthouse Monday in Jonesboro, remains in jail on $1 million bond.

Two attempted murder charges, as well as two counts of theft and one count of burglary remain against Bates in connection with the attacks that seriously injured Mary Shepard and Leona Mount, two workers of the First Baptist Church of Anna.

Bates was appointed a new public defender Monday in court, as a conflict of interest arose with his originally-appointed attorney.

Another court appearance was scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 17.
