| September 23, 2011

Two Barron County, Wis., men were sentenced this week for burning down a 135-year-old church in western Wisconsin.

During a hearing Tuesday in Barron County Circuit Court, Lucas J. Schultz, 18, and Jesse J. Unruh, 21, were each given 12 years of probation, five years of extended supervision and a stayed sentence of five years in prison. In addition, Judge Timothy Doyle sentenced Schultz to seven months in jail and Unruh to four months in jail.

A restitution hearing for Schultz, of Cameron, Wis., and Unruh, of Barron, Wis., is scheduled for Oct. 13.

The Rev. Bob Friese of New Scandinavia Lutheran Church in the town of Maple Grove – the church Schultz and Unruh destroyed in December – said Thursday that he hoped the pair would be able to move on and "do better things with their lives."
