Vandals do $20k worth of damage to Newton church window

Newton — On April 7, Newton’s Presbyterian Church on Vernon Street will celebrate the building's 130th birthday.

But this year’s anniversary will be hampered by the destructive aftermath of vandals who shattered the church’s stained-glass windows that have been part of the structure since the late 1800s.

“You have to have a lot of guts to attack a church like that,” said Senior Pastor Robert Perkins. “No sense of shame. It’s very troubling.”

Perkins said on Tuesday, Feb. 22, the church’s sexton entered the sanctuary and discovered a large stone inside the halls.

Above, a stained-glass portrait of St. Paul was broken in several places.

In one area, there is a hole where an angel's face was.
