Vandals target Collinsville church on Easter Sunday

| April 5, 2010

Collinsville police are investigating a case of church vandalism after someone spray-painted offensive markings on the front of the Gathering Place Church in the 2000 block of Keebler Road.

Church members discovered the vandalism just hours before Easter services, which also happened to be the first services in the church's new home. The church purchased the building from the Collinsville Jaycees last month. Since then, an army of volunteers has been working day and night getting the church ready in time for Easter Services.

The Pastor, Rev. Wayne Reid has a message for the vandals.

"We're after them – we don't want to physically hurt them – we want to see them get spiritually healed, 'cause there has to be something wrong with somebody that will write on buildings and the things they wrote are satanical things, " Rev. Reid said.

In the end, the church community did celebrate Easter. But only after an hour of additional early morning clean-up work on the church's brand new siding.

Rev. Reid says Collinsville police say they'll likely investigate the vandalism as a hate crime. Anyone with information is asked to call Collinsville Police.
