Vans stolen from Camden churches

| September 16, 2011

CAMDEN — Church passenger vans in Camden have apparently become a hot item for thieves.

In the past three weeks, five vans have been stolen and at least a half dozen more broken into. All but one of the vans belonged to a city church, according to Camden police. At least eight different churches have had vans stolen or damaged.

Camden police officials said Thursday they are well aware of the recent thefts.

“We’re actively investigating this and are pursuing a number of leads,” Deputy Chief Mike Lynch said. Police officials declined to discuss a possible motive.

Rev. Barbara Farmer of Faith Tabernacle Church has had one van stolen and another broken into.

“We just felt violated because it is ours and we have had it for such a long time,” Farmer said of the passenger van, stolen from the church lot in the 500 block of Spruce Street sometime between the evening of Aug. 23 and the next day.
