Vicar distraught at church blaze

| June 16, 2009

A Norfolk vicar has spoken of his sadness after a blaze at his “beautiful” church destroyed part of the building that had become an essential community space.

The Rev Mark Taylor, from Carleton Rode Baptist Church, said damage caused in the fire has wrecked part of the area which had just started to be used by 40 children as a youth club.

Arsonists are believed to be responsible for the fire which ripped through the building on Monday night.

More than 50pc of the “attractive” Grade II listed building dating back to 1812 was damaged, but particularly the school room, which the vicar and father-of-four said was pulling in a large number of children who were desperate for a space to congregate.
