| February 15, 2012

A man of 43 was last night being questioned over the murder of a vicar in his home.

The suspect was held after Reverend John Suddards, 59, was found stabbed to death.

It emerged that Rev Suddards would invite the needy and hungry into his home.

A friend said: “John never wanted to turn anyone away.”

The Venerable Geoffrey Sidaway, archdeacon of Gloucester, added: “Many clergy open their homes to people and that can make them vulnerable.”

As forensic experts searched the scene and two nearby churches for clues in Thornbury, Glos, police appealed for people who knew him to come forward.

Det Chief Insp Simon Crisp said: “He had only lived her a few months so we are appealing for people who went to church and knew him to come forward.”
