Volunteer charged with embezzling $4,000 from local Catholic church

A volunteer treasurer for a local Catholic church is accused of stealing more than $4,000 from a special-activity fund over a nine-month period, Winston-Salem police said in a news release Monday.

Rose Parks Hinson, 61, of 5313 Hunt Park Court in Winston-Salem was arrested Monday and charged with embezzlement.

Hinson had been the volunteer treasurer for the Saint Monica’s Ladies Guild Fund at St. Benedict The Moor Catholic Church at 1625 E. 12 th St. The church said in a statement Monday that the ladies guild has been around for 50 years and has supported the parish’s sacristy, a room in the church where certain sacred items are kept, and other needs of the church.

Winston-Salem police officers went to the church Aug. 24 on a report of alleged embezzlement. The department’s financial crimes unit soon took over the investigation, according to the news release.

Investigators found that Hinson had taken more than $4,000 from the ladies guild fund over a nine-month period.
